A downtown block for food, arts, markets, classes and the people who make Peterborough feel like Peterborough.
340 George St N, Peterborough, ON
A downtown community destination
Peterborough Square opened in the 1970s as a traditional enclosed retail mall. Over the decades it has quietly re-imagined itself into something the city actually needs: a community block with great food, arts classes, education services, honest local retail and the restored Showplace heritage theatre all under one roof.
It sits on George Street North beside City Hall and the clock tower, on one of Peterborough's oldest blocks.
What's inside
A hand-picked mix of independent tenants you won't find anywhere else in Peterborough. Here's how the block breaks down.
Alba Pizzeria — called one of the best pizza places in Peterborough. Simply Thai, Tokyo Sushi, The Favourite Greek, El Camino's, Subway, Allen Gourmet Coffee downstairs, plus a milk tea bar.
Showplace Performing Arts Centre — a fully restored heritage theatre attached to the block. The Artisans Centre Peterborough brings together Kawartha Spinners & Weavers, Kawartha Woodturners and Kawartha Gourders with rotating classes open to the public.
A weekly farmer & artisan market brings heirloom produce, baking and Kawartha craft outdoors on the Square in the warm months and indoors the rest of the year. Locals know to come early.
A career college, ESL classes, First Aid 4U Canadian Red Cross training, and the Alzheimer Society of Peterborough-Kawartha Lakes office — a public-good mix you don't usually find under one mall roof.
Heart2Hand tattoo studio, Toadstool Pokémon & trading cards, a pet supply shop, and rotating specialty stores that keep the block curious. All independent. All local.
A hidden gem
One reviewer put it better than we ever could: "Hidden gem. In the middle of downtown but basically deserted at most times. Great food, one of the best pizza places in Peterborough, and great Thai food for a good price. Quiet art and craft stores with a nice cafe downstairs."
That's exactly who we are. A place for locals who have time. Quiet mornings at the café. A woodturning class upstairs. The farmer's market on Saturday. A show at Showplace in the evening. No rush. No crowds.
